93. Person of Letters

PDF / PUZ

Hello hello! Welcome to May! My students love this month...when it's over, haha. Finals prep and AP exams are keeping them busy! I'm also in the midst of taking ten practice AP exams for fun, since that's what I do.

Cubbies hit a bit of a rough patch since I last checked in, but I think we might be coming out of it. We're facing only the Pirates (a mid-level team, but their huge prospect Paul Skenes is being called up today! His major-league debut is against, of course, the Cubbies!) and the Braves (elite, but their rival Phillies have been even more elite lately) for the next couple of weeks.

I will likely continue Summer of Solves, but by this time the previous two years, I had most puzzle ideas at least tentatively sketched. I am...not there yet, so I might be hoping inspiration strikes on a weekly basis!

1. Puzzle #92 answer: ZEPHYR

Correct entries: 53 - so a solid Level 2/2.5 or so. (Though I know the trap threw a few of you!)

Shortest explanation: Six clues contain the word "wind" in part of them. The initial letters of these spell out NOT YET, indicating that's not quite the mechanism! Rather, six other entries in the grid are those "windy" words with the "wind" blown away and replaced by a different letter. These replaced letters spell out ZEPHYR in top-bottom order, the meta answer. Great graphic above!

2. This is a Level 1. You deserve it. (And my quest to make the smallest meta ever continues with this one, though I suppose you could make a 1-by-1 meta!!)

Until next time, my friends, may all your solves be beautiful!

Mikey G

The answer to the meta is a former winner of the Nobel Prize for Literature.
