21. Use the Fourth (Meta 7)

 PDF / PUZ

Another meta hot off the presses - though last month's was the one that was truly all about that Hot Stuff! More on that in a bit. If I had the bandwidth to make a meta a week, I definitely would - but I'm busy with all of my other pursuits, including work, so a monthly meta will have to suffice! (There's plenty of other metas out there to keep you busy, for sure!!)

1. June recap

May answer: JUNE CARTER (CASH) (to celebrate June, of course!)

Correct entries: 8, haha - maybe a little trickier this time!

Winner: LesY

One of my favorites to this day! I wouldn't likely use the word SHEW unless I absolutely 100% couldn't find a better crossing (or felt like referencing Ed Sullivan!). The five entries highlighted above have clues that end with something that could be considered "hot," hence the title! (The longer theme entries are meant to nudge you into looking at the last words of five of the clues - I might not always be that nice, haha.)

SHEW: From Exodus 7:9: "When Pharaoh shall speak unto you, saying, ___ a miracle for you: then thou shalt say unto Aaron, Take thy rod" (hot rod)

ROTE: By ___: how you can teach your parrot (probs not your dog) (hot dog)

RING: On "The Golden Girls," Stanley Zbornak placed one for Dorothy inside a baked potato (hot potato)

OFF: You might take it with wings (hot wings)

IRE: On "Seinfeld," the Bubble Boy exhibits this emotion when playing Trivial Pursuit (hot pursuit) - guest solver Paolo, who needed a nudge, admitted the awkward wording of this one should've given it away! Note that any "Seinfeld" reference is considered acceptable in a crossword, thanks.

2. Today's puzzle has a Level of 3 of 5, but your mileage may vary! To quote the one and only Matt Gaffney, "Solve well, and be not led astray by words intended to deceive."

There is a multi-word directive concealed within this puzzle. The answer to that directive is the answer to this meta.
